When she goes against his wishes, man does not care even for his mother. So he thinks his own desire is what matters. No, no. Humanness is what matters. When humanness comes first, all desires are fulfilled naturally. Once humanness is gone, what use is it if your desires are fulfilled? The men of today, through many desires, are gathering good and bad in many ways. But if man himself is not there, for whom are these joys and sorrows? There are great mansions. There is as much balance in the bank as one wants. In the home there are joys and comforts. But what use is their being there? Because there is no humanness, all of it becomes meaningless. So, students, first of all we must develop humanness.
Man must try to live as a man. In society we must gain honour and ideals. Though the man dies, the ideal must not die. You must become ideal students. Wherever you go you must earn a good name. That is how this good name comes. Our conduct is the cause of a good name and a bad one. So we must improve our conduct. We must conduct ourselves so that the people around us approve. Whether the people around you conduct themselves well or not is no concern of yours. You must conduct yourself as pleases you. Your conscience must be content. But it is not content either. So you are betraying yourself. You are deceiving yourself. You yourself are entering a bad path. So you yourself are becoming a thief to yourself. You must catch the thief within you and become the master.
Students! You must be masters, not slaves. We must control the senses, bear what are called sorrow, grief and hardship, and give the mind the right courage and daring. Such glucose injection, calcium injection comes to us through the Upaniṣads alone. The Upaniṣads themselves are the right meaning of it. The whole essence lies in this very word. Upa: it is near. When we are near it, all its values come to us. A small example. In an air-conditioned room, if you sit near the air conditioner, the cool air that comes from it touches you and the heat in you goes.
