In plain words
When Subhadrā was with child, Arjuna went on telling of the Padmavyūha. To Subhadrā. But Subhadrā lost herself. Abhimanyu, who was within, heard this Padmavyūha. When Līlāvatī was with child, Nārada came and taught of the sacred sense of Brahman. … Prahlāda listened well. All such thoughts reach the child in the womb. Mother and child have one bond. One food. So the mother must take due care and must form the habit of taking due care with sacred words, sacred sights and sacred hearing. And the root cause of children going astray. I must tell the women one thing. Through today's growth of education, through this science and technology, the work that people must do is all done by machines. They put on a cooker. Sambar, rice, everything is done in it. Then they need not toil at all. But they do not look after their own children. As soon as the children are born, she is in a job or some other kind of work and goes off to the office. She hands the children over to an ayah. The child follows all the ayah's ways of affection and little by little grows up. Then there is no bond or kinship with the mother at all. The mother's touch, the mother's talk, the mother's look must be very close. That is why in the old days the mother herself looked after the little child twenty-four hours. The mother herself bathed it. The mother herself fed it milk. The mother herself put it to sleep. The mother herself laid it down beside her. Seeing, touching and talking of this kind were joined with the mother herself. In this modern age, what is becoming of this? Only the bearing is her part. All the looking after is the ayah's part. The nurse's part. They send the children with these nurses to the beach or to public parks. When they send them in the car, the boy hears all the things the driver and the ayah talk of there. All those words become his habit. The very practices of this ayah come to him. In the end, if the ayah dies he weeps, but if his mother dies he does not weep. What is the reason? He has no bond with his mother. So how can sorrow come? In this way the sway of Kali is separating mother and children.
The culture of Bhārata has been nourished from ancient times in so sacred a state. We must understand this sacred culture well. We think all this is somehow uncivilised.
