In the world today, the root cause of each one's success and failure is that person's own faith. ‘Mānava’ means one who has faith. But man today has lost faith, the chief value that ought to be in such a man. Even in very small matters man lives with boundless faith. Yet in spiritual matters alone, man today has no faith. To go to the market, buy vegetables and come home, you need a great deal of faith. So a man goes to the market only out of the faith ‘I shall come back’. Man trusts even so small a thing as this. Yet no one has any guarantee of going to the market and getting home again. Some accident may happen, and he may not get home. In this way man places boundless faith in what holds no certainty. When a man lays the foundation of a house today, he lays that foundation only out of the faith ‘I shall finish it in the second year’. But on what does that faith rest, that he will live until next year? In worldly matters, which hold no such certainty, man puts his faith in everything. Only in God, the eternal Satya, the divine, is man losing this faith. Faith should rest on divinity. The things of the world pass away; they are momentary. They are not to be trusted. Yet faith in what is not to be trusted keeps growing.
