Passage 12

In plain words

Then they decided, ‘We must take Bābā to court.’ But this Śivadās insisted hard: ‘You must not take Bābā to court.’ He sent the court a petition asking them to set up a commission.

When they meant to set up a commission, there was a brother of Kākā Dīkṣit here. They appointed Bāyijī as commissioner. He knew Bābā well. He went on putting all sorts of questions to Bābā. To all of them Bābā: ‘These are what I gave! They are not thieves. They came to Me and asked, and I gave,’ and in this way He went on answering. The commissioner pondered a while: ‘So that's how it is! Bābā is giving spiritual answers,’ he thought. ‘Swami! This is a worldly court. You must not answer like this. Did you give them or not? Did they come to you? Or not? Tell me that,’ he said. Then: ‘Apart from Bābā, where is the world, man? Inside law there is Satan. Apart from Me, where is the world?’ He said outright. Hearing those words, the Government Pleader: ‘We have no more business with this madman. Let us go,’ he said. He decided that Bābā was a madman. As they were leaving, Bābā called out. ‘All goods are with us. Wasn't it I who gave to you?’: this is how He went on. Like this: ‘Wasn't it I who gave to you? Wasn't it I who gave to him?’ As He kept on in this way: ‘Well! This madness of His is only getting worse,’ said the Government Pleader, and he sat in his tonga and went away.

Without faith, however much Bhakti there is, whatever kinds of service one does, it is of no use

‘This commission is of no use now; we must call Him to Bombay and question Him there’: and the court sent a summons to Shirdi. That by such-and-such a date, at such-and-such a time, He must appear in court. All the devotees there were deeply upset. Dās Gaṇu was always with Bābā. He began to weep: ‘Send Bābā to court?’ Then Bābā: ‘Hey, sit down! You stay as you are. I will go,’ He said. Settling that he must be at such-and-such a station in Bombay by 9 o'clock the next day, he was getting the tickets and all ready.
