Passage 10

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

What is the value of the studies we have pursued? The animal has studied nothing! Has it gone to any college? If we go all the way to college, study, take degrees, and in the end behave like animals, what is the difference between man and animal? We must develop Buddhi. We must make the mind pure. We must keep our humanness. We must light up divinity. Only because he walks against this way does man lose his humanness day by day. Man's senses are turning into Yama's messengers. Our senses and all our feelings must not be Yama's messengers. They must be avadhūtas. Today men who should be avadhūtas are turning into Yama's messengers. Tormenting everyone, hurting everyone, troubling everyone: this is how things have become. Help ever, hurt never. We must develop this broad outlook.

The festivals of the people of Bhārata are all full of inner meaning!

They gave Vināyaka an elephant's face. What is its inner meaning? Does any human being have an elephant's face? This goes quite against creation. Then what is the reason this head came to Vināyaka? Its inner meaning is something else. Vināyaka has great intelligence. He has great power of intellect. That is why people speak of ‘elephant wisdom’. The elephant has intelligence beyond measure. It trusts no one but its master. That is, it trusts nothing but God. Since Vināyaka has such intelligence, they brought an elephant's face and showed it there, as if it belonged to Him. You see it yourselves. The children in the hostel. On that road so many cars go and come. Right beside it is Sai Gita. It pays no heed to any of them. Even if I say nothing, if I go that way it catches the scent. It comes out trumpeting. That is elephant faith. That is, strong faith. Strong intelligence. Strong Prema. It does not sway this way and that. It does not shift from moment to moment. It never changes. That which has such intelligence, such faith, such deep trust is called ‘elephant-faced’.
