Passage 9

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

That is, worldly feeling is what is made up of sound, touch, form, taste, smell and the like. Prakṛti is made up of comforts and riches; the spiritual is made up of the spirit of tyāga. Only when we give up comforts and riches is the spiritual gained. That is why they said ‘Nakarmaṇā naprajayā dhanena tyāgenaike amṛtatvamānasuḥ’. If immortality is to come to us, tyāga is needed. But man today is not ready for tyāga. Longing and longing for physical comforts and riches, he ruins his mind with desires beyond all measure. There is no end at all to these longings. That is why humanness is perishing little by little. The whole mind is turning into nothing but filth. Every word is filling up with untruth. Everything man sets his foot on turns into adharma. There is no measure at all to the desires he desires. Divine caitanya is sinking to the bottom. Thoughts of the higher good are vanishing. Hatred and envy are going beyond all bounds. Lust, anger and the rest are binding man fast. Humanness itself is ceasing to be. People live as human beings, but there is no humanness.

To follow the principle of the heart is human quality

Only when there is humanness is one a human being. What is human quality? To follow the principle of the heart is human quality. Follow your conscience; do not follow the body. Do not follow the mind. Mind is a mad monkey, body is like a water bubble. Don’t follow the body, don’t follow the mind, follow the conscience. This is what we must do. Where has this conscience come from? It has come from the consciousness that pervades everything. This consciousness is caitanya. From this caitanya came the witness. That is the conscience. That conscience is the mind. So this consciousness is the Ātma. Conscious is the body. Conscious, conscience, consciousness. Conscious-body: what is joined with the senses is the body, what is joined with the witness is the mind, what is joined with caitanya is the Ātma. That is why: The one you think you are - that is conscious. The one others think you are - that is conscience.
