Passage 6

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

They are growing hatred. If you truly resolve to listen to Swami's teachings, why should you not put them into practice? Their dwelling is the ashram. Look at their actions: wickedness. Are you doing any work at all with śraddhā? Do you speak Satya anywhere? Do you offer a single word with Prema? It is not seen anywhere. It is not heard. Answer with Prema. Someone draws you into talk. They say, "What is the news?" "I do not wish to talk. Swami does not like too much talking; I am obeying Swami's command": what is wrong in saying this nicely, with a namaskāram? Students or teachers or doctors, one does not see a single person who answers with Prema. Why should you listen to discourses? For having listened, something must be remembered, must it not! When a downpour falls, there must be some moisture below, must there not? For discourses and bhajans they come and sit in the front seats. Look at the bhajan: these women quarrelling at bhajan, "The front seat is mine, the front seat is mine." Why this Ahaṅkāra in them? Wherever it may be, they are hearing the remembrance of God's Name; be happy, thinking that alone is enough. There is as much compassion as you could want. There is as much Prema as you could want. But you do not fill it into your hearts. A downpour is falling. If you set a pot with its mouth to the rain, at least a little water stays in it. But if you set the pot upside down, however heavy the downpour, not a drop stays. Those who listen to discourses today set the pot of the heart upside down. That is why not even a little falls into your heart. What are you to come here for? What are you to live here for? Is there no place anywhere else? What use is there in having come! What have you achieved? What are you achieving? What are you experiencing? What are you enjoying? Nothing. Time is being wasted. From today at least, recognise the truth, and when anyone asks anything, answer with Prema. There is public connection. You all know: accommodation, information office, canteen, bookstall; there are ever so many. Wherever you go, these people are turning into bull dogs, alsatian dogs; they are not to be seen as people with a proper, good heart. What are they to live for? We have had the hospital built, spending crores upon crores. Why should they not look after them with Prema? There are some. They look after them. But when people come in great pain, if one speaks a sweet, kind word to them, their illness is cured.
