Passage 8

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Karṇa too was gone. No one was there. Only the five Pāṇḍavas were there. At that time Vidura also came. Draupadī would not stay apart from the Pāṇḍavas. Draupadī came. She bowed to Bhīṣma. She sat down. She was born from fire. Kṛṣṇa praised her good qualities very highly. As for a pativratā, Kṛṣṇa Himself said that not even Satyabhāmā or Rukmiṇī was one. He said Draupadī, who had five husbands, was the pativratā. Everyone laughed. Kṛṣṇa said, "I will tell you the reason for this. Listen."

She never sets out to gainsay her husbands' many words; she never says she has no time to serve them; she keeps content with what she has; there is no pativratā to equal Draupadī.

So He said Draupadī was a great pativratā. The five Pāṇḍavas are the five prāṇas themselves. Prāṇa, apāna, vyāna, udāna, samāna: so they appear in five forms. The five prāṇas themselves are her husbands. Bhīma is the son of Vāyu. Arjuna is the son of Indra. The five prāṇas became her husbands. They are not five worldly husbands. At such a time Bhīṣma is teaching Dharma. "Dharmaja! You have won the kingdom. You were able to gain it by the Grace of Kṛṣṇa. Who do you think Kṛṣṇa is? You think of Him as your friend, your brother-in-law. You think of Him as a blood relation. You are badly mistaken. He is Nārāyaṇa Himself. Do not hold on to a bodily relationship. With such a God you are passing your time, whether playing or singing. What good fortune is ours!" Saying this, he teaches the Śānti Parva. How one should be. How one should conduct oneself. In what state the Manas must stay brave. He is teaching the dharmas that bear on human life.

All the Pāṇḍavas are listening with bowed heads. Draupadī could not contain herself; she did not laugh in jest. She did not laugh in scorn. "Draupadī laughed in front of so many people!" and Bhīma's shoulders shook. Dharmarāja, Dharma embodied, opened his eyes wide and looked at Draupadī. Arjuna looked at her with his eyes as if looking with hatred. He looked at her in anger: what was this, laughing in the assembly? Bhīṣma, who had seen the truth: "Dharmaja, Arjuna, Bhīma, Nakula and Sahadeva, you are misunderstanding Draupadī.
