Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Birth again, death again, lying again in a mother's womb; this worldly life is hard indeed to cross; by Your grace carry me across, protect me, O Murāri! Worship Govinda, worship Govinda, worship Govinda, O foolish mind! When the appointed time draws near, ‘ḍukṛñ karaṇe’ will never, never save you.

Are we to bring our life to its end between just these two, birth and death? What is the aim of our life? What is the goal of this life? They regard humanness as most sacred. ‘Jantūnāṃ narajanma durlabhaṃ.’ What is this rarity? This is not what we must ask for. We must show our life to be an ideal life.

Only when you love your father today will your children love you tomorrow

Our Vice-Chancellor said this: Children perform śrāddha for their parents who have died. As a way of showing gratitude with śraddhā once a year, they show their gratitude with streams of tears. They gave this the name ‘tat-dinaṃ = taddinaṃ’. To remember on that day the day they died and, thanking them for granting this birth, to let fall two streams of tears: that is the true tarpaṇa. First of all, we must offer gratitude to our parents. Why so? Your blood, your food, your head: your parents gift. First of all, we must offer them gratitude. On the day they died we must remember them; we must remember their Prema and our life, which they brought to growth, and offer tarpaṇa with streams of tears. This is the foremost duty of every son. When you perform those sacred rites today, in the future the same reaction, resound, reflection will be yours. Only when you love your father today will your children love you tomorrow. When you cheat your parents today, your children will cheat you. In this world of nature, in this physical world, in this impermanent world, there is reaction, resound, reflection.
