In plain words
Born again, dying again, lying again in a mother's womb; in this world's round, so very hard to cross, carry me across in Your mercy, O Murāri!
Do not trust the world; keep the Lord of the world in mind
Once, as Śaṅkara was going to the Gaṅgā with his disciples, on the way there was a man seated under a tree: ‘Ḍukṛñ karaṇe… Ḍukṛñ karaṇe…’, reciting a rule of Pāṇini's grammar over and over, and Śaṅkara noticed it. He went up to him: ‘My son! When your last hour draws near, ‘ḍukṛñ karaṇe’ will not save you. So worship Govinda,’ he taught him.
Worship Govinda, worship Govinda, worship Govinda, O foolish mind; when the appointed time is near at hand, ‘ḍukṛñ karaṇe’ will never, never save you.
You must not run after scholarship, after name and fame. Name and fame come today and go tomorrow. When there is water in a pond, many frogs come into it. When the water dries up, not a single frog is to be seen there. In the same way, while you have plenty of money, many people gather round you. If your pockets are empty, no one will even look at your face. So do not trust the world. Keep the Lord of the world in mind. ‘Worship Govinda.’ By teachings of this kind Ādi Śaṅkara went on increasing the spiritual wealth of Bhārata. But today who follows Śaṅkara's teachings? You must show him your gratitude by putting his message into practice. Each country, each state, has some customs of its own. We must never forget them. But today all the customs have turned into mere fashions. This is not the right way. All the ancient customs must sink deep into our hearts. We must teach children their worth from childhood itself and set them on the right path. We must give them fitting training. We must have them ‘practise’ our ancient customs.
