In plain words
‘Dharmo rakṣati rakṣitaḥ’: when we protect Dharma, Dharma protects us. ‘Dharma eva hato hanti’: when we kill it, it too kills us.
We must make the humanness we have been given worthwhile
Embodiments of Prema! Humanness has come to us by great good fortune. We must try to make this human birth, which is such good fortune, worthwhile. We must not, instead, labour for worldly pleasures and joys. All these are momentary. So however long one lives, all these are momentary. That is why we must worship God. Śaṅkarācārya, who taught so much spiritual Jñāna, at the very last entered into Bhakti.
Born again, dying again, lying again in a mother's womb; in this world's round, so very hard to cross, carry me across in Your mercy, O Murāri! Worship Govinda, worship Govinda, worship Govinda, O foolish mind; when the appointed time is near at hand, ‘ḍukṛñ karaṇe’ will not save you, no, not at all.
Śaṅkarācārya's Advaita is a very sacred Advaita. But within Advaita he gave importance to Bhakti. This Bhakti is essential for every man. Bhakti is not merely a ritual of some kind. There must be the principle of Prema, fit for practising it with Ānanda, delighting in it and experiencing it. For a man without this principle of Prema, however much he does, there is no use. So we must attain the Jñāna of Advaita through Prema alone.
