In plain words
Without faith in God you can achieve nothing
Students! Get your ‘O’ grade. Study well. Take the Gold medal. That gives Me great joy! But along with that, develop faith in God. Without that faith you can achieve nothing. What is the use of achieving everything else? All these are worthless! When you gain God's grace along with everything, you find fulfilment. However many things you have, there is no use at all.
When you are born from your mother's womb, no necklaces at all are to be seen; of fine pearl strings there is not even a trace; no chain of pure gold round the neck; no necklaces of gems are there to shine; no emeralds or rubies are to be seen; no necklaces of diamonds are there to flourish; no hessonites keep you company. There is, there is one garland on your neck: gathering up the karmas of past births, good or bad, without breaking any off, Brahmā gives you that heavy garland and sends you forth, the neck-garland strung with all your karmas!
That garland is on everyone's neck. But it is not seen; there is one garland that is seen. That garland must be a good garland. It must be a garland of fragrant flowers. It must not be a garland of foul smell. Cool down these vāsanās for sense objects as far as you can. How is Vairāgya to come? Many people keep thinking, ‘Desire for this will go, desire for that will go.’
