Passage 10

In plain words

Bodies are each separate. Heads are each separate, but the Ātma is one alone! Here you must consider two conditions. Heart is one thing, art another! People today follow art alone; art means what faces outward; art is all born of oneself. What is born of oneself? That is what the qualities of pravṛtti are. The vṛtti of the five elements is pravṛtti. Desire, anger, greed, delusion, pride and envy are all born of oneself! All that is born of oneself bears nothing but the marks of pravṛtti! All these are negatives. Man has very great need of two things. One is the head, the second the heart. But what is born of the heart is compassion, forbearance, sympathy, the principle of Prema. The Physical heart is on the left side in the body. The Spiritual heart is on the right side. Right is always right; left side heart, only left. When it will go, no one knows. Leaving is its very nature. We must not hold tight to what leaves. We must take the Spiritual heart, which stays for ever. What sees what is inside is the heart. What sees what is outside is art. Today people spend their whole lives with their eyes on art alone, but they cannot recognise the truth of the heart. Without the Heart, where did art come from? Art came from heart. All this art came from the heart itself. So we must keep the spiritual in view as our goal. Only when we regard the divine feeling as the right side will it stay permanent for ever.

The principle of the Ātma that is in all is one alone!

Even today everyone remembers the stories of the great souls who led a spiritual life. So we must rest our life upon the spiritual heart. What all have is that one alone! That is why the feeling of helping everyone arose. It is not for someone else; it is doing it for oneself! Close your eyes once and inquire. You say, ‘I am eating’. For whom are you eating? Inquire. The answer comes, ‘You are eating for yourself alone’. This body has fallen ill. You are taking medicine. For whom are you taking this medicine? The reply comes, ‘I am taking it for myself alone’.
