Passage 12

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Those who have tasted it they called ‘Amṛtasya putrāḥ’. Today if you ask which of the five elements is the chief, they say, ‘the purse’. ‘The purse’ is one of the five elements, and the other elements count for nothing. They think it is enough to have the purse alone. Of the five elements, is the purse the chief? Life is the chief.

God does not weigh level with money

If there is no life and there is a purse, what use is it? There is all the money one wants. This money has wings; it goes wherever it likes. It goes round the whole world. But to God it will not take you. To any number of other places it will take you. To God it will not take you. Here is a lovely story in which Satyabhāmā plays the chief part. On one occasion Nārada put Kṛṣṇa up for sale. Out of the selfish feeling that Kṛṣṇa must be hers alone, Satyabhāmā tried to buy Kṛṣṇa. What was the reason? She had the Syamantaka gem. The wealth she wanted grew day by day. Satyabhāmā grew the selfish notion that she could put that wealth in the scale, weigh it, and make Kṛṣṇa her own. But God did not weigh level with wealth. She put in all the wealth she wanted. She put in all her jewels. Kṛṣṇa did not move in the least. Why did Kṛṣṇa do this? He is the director of the play. He acted in this way to teach well the truth that God does not weigh level with wealth. At last Rukmiṇī came.

A leaf or a flower, a fruit or water: Your yielding to the one who has Bhakti, if that is true, Kṛṣṇa! then may You, against this tulasī leaf, weigh level!

Praying thus with Bhakti, she laid a single tulasī leaf in one pan of the scales. Here the leaf means not a bilva leaf, nor a mārēḍu leaf. The body itself is a leaf. For this leaf is made up of three leaflets.
