Passage 3

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Sacrifice is yoga, indulgence is disease

Today in Bhārata we see crores of people suffering for want of water. The root cause of this is nothing but the fault in men's conduct. In the past all Bhāratīyas crowned sacrifice, tied the sacred wrist-thread on justice, raised Dharma onto the palanquin and welcomed Satya. Tell Me, what is there in life without sacrifice? If we do not let out again the air we have breathed in, our lungs are ruined. If we do not void at the other end the food we have eaten, the stomach goes bad. So sacrifice does us a great deal of good. Sacrifice becomes yoga; indulgence turns into disease. So every man must sacrifice something, a little, as far as his strength allows, and give his fellow men the help they need. We see so many people suffering, and seeing them we feel pity. But what use is that? Only when we show pity in the form of action does it come to fulfilment.

Manas must change

Embodiments of Prema! The ministers who came here today spoke in a way that touched the heart. Only when we put such words into action shall we progress to any extent. Our Chief Minister, the Union Minister, the Speaker: all of them have given you a great deal of zeal and encouragement. If you hear these with one ear and let them go with the other, it is of no use. They must take root in your heart; they must take the form of action. Today not Bhārata alone but the whole world looks like a festoon of problems. Some may be seen, some may not be seen. If these problems are to be solved, man must first become good. It is no use if only the body is set right; Manas must change. You must fill your heart with compassion. Above all, you must develop Prema. But the Prema of man today changes from moment to moment. “In the days when there is affection, no faults, however many, can arise; but once that affection turns sour, faults alone appear.” When you are friendly with the other man, whatever he does looks good to you. Even if he should strike you, “Oho! It has done me a lot of good that he struck me. There was a pain here before. Now that pain has gone,” you say, and you are happy. But suppose some hatred has arisen between the two of you: even if he throws a rose at you, you think he did it with the ill intent that its thorn should pierce you. This is man's weakness. True Prema must not change in any circumstance. To look at everything with an eye of difference because a difference has come in some one matter is foolishness. Fools such as these are the ones who stand in the way of works for progress. It is not good to take fright at such people and give up our works for progress. What we have to do, we must do without fail; however many troubles and losses come, we must face them with courage.

Every person must give his labour

Embodiments of the divine Ātma! On this holy day of Vijayadaśamī, when the yajña has come to its close today in Prasanthi Nilayam, the Chief Minister has taken up the responsibility of running our drinking water project and has given his word that he will run it without any difficulty of any kind.
