Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

We must desire the welfare of the world. This is the very first quality. ‘Sarvaguṇa-sampannaḥ’: this is the second. We must acquire good qualities. ‘Sarvajñānaika-sampannaḥ’: this is the third. We must attain Jñāna of every kind. To desire the good of the world, to acquire every good quality, to attain all Jñāna. These three alone are the chief limbs of man. He who has achieved these three can conquer the three worlds. That is why they said, ‘Tridalaṃ triguṇākāraṃ trinetraṃ ca triyāyudham, trijanma-pāpa-saṃhāraṃ eka-bilvaṃ śivārpaṇam’. What we must offer God: we must offer Him the heart endowed with these three qualities. We must live in the world through these three. These three qualities alone are the very foundation of Prema. When we cannot put our faith in this principle of Prema, we can achieve nothing.

Lasting Ānanda comes only through Prema for God

Embodiments of Prema! Every man is full of Prema. But when his wish is fulfilled, he makes that Prema grow beyond measure. When that wish is not fulfilled, he crushes his Prema down. This is not the right sādhana.

When your wish is granted, you praise Me to the skies; when your wish is not granted, you revile Me for nothing; you do sinful deeds, and when the fruit is trouble, in disgust you lay the blame on Me, saying, “You do not protect us.”

Commit sin and want the fruit of merit: can that be? Sow bitter seeds and want sweet fruit: will that happen! When you want sweet fruit, you must sow sweet seeds. Only then do we get sweet fruit. So if we want to live a sweet life in the world, we must enter into sacred karma. All these worldly actions give us passing joy. Lasting Ānanda comes to us only through Prema for God. In others too there is Prema for God.
