Passage 18

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Reducing desires little by little and entering sacred service, one must go on doing service in society. One must go on honouring every human being. Only then will divinity emerge in you. This is the royal road fit for you to attain that divinity. This sādhana, that sādhana: they are crazy sādhanas. All these give only passing satisfaction. But what gives lasting Ānanda is one alone: the path of Prema. That path of Prema makes the whole world full of Prema. That Prema is the very form of God. That Satya is God in person. That Śānti is God in person. That is Sat Cit Ānanda. We need not go somewhere and strive for Saccidānanda. Our own true form is Saccidānanda. The body itself is God. The Ātma itself is God. The oneness of the two, jīva and body, is Saccidānanda. Saccidānanda is joined either with the body or with the Ātma. Without the body we do not know the Ātma. Without the Ātma there is no body at all. Through the oneness of the two, it is there as the form of body and Ātma. Experiencing such a path and doing divine service to others, you must make the proper effort to experience divinity. One must take this to be the inner meaning of Śivarātri. Spend this one night today contemplating the name of God. This will be true fulfilment. One night in the year. How many nights you make impure! That is not it. This is the truly worthwhile night. This is Śivarātri. The rest are śavarātris; you must not live such a night. One must live Śivarātri.
