Passage 1

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Satya is the very form of God

From Satya all creation was brought forth; in Satya all creation is dissolved; search as you may, where is the place without the glory of Satya? This is pure sattva: see it, sirs.

Satya holds good in all three times. This very Satya protects life. It does not merely protect it. Creation, too, goes on. When we recognise the inner meaning within Satya: sat + i + ya = satyam. Sat means life. The syllable i means food. Yam means the sun. Through the sun, food comes into being. Through food, living beings live. Food above all is the chief thing in protecting life. “Bhikṣānnaṃ deharakṣārthaṃ.” For the sake of protecting the body, the sun provides food. The day we change this form of Satya, that very day we shall run short of food. Lives waste away precisely when that food runs short. So the protection of the world rests wholly on the sun. When we enquire into it another way: sa, ta, ya, satya. Read from the end: ya, ta, sa. Only when we practise tapas with yama, niyama and the rest does the embodiment of Satya, called Satya, reveal Himself. We must do tapas through control of the senses. What is tapas? The very unity of the three guṇas is tapas. What lacks this unity of the three guṇas becomes tamas. The feeling of the heart, the utterance of the word and the doing of deeds must become one. The word Satya holds many inner meanings and sacred strengths. Feeling is made up of saṅkalpas. Only when the feelings are sacred do actions, too, become sacred.
