In plain words
Those who have earned the Prema of God gain every strength. People do not strive for that Prema. They think, ‘We want some comforts; we want the facilities we need.’ How long do these facilities and comforts last? All of these change in a moment. For this very reason Śaṅkara said:
‘Take no pride in wealth, people or youth; in an instant Time takes them all away.’
These are things that slip away in a single second. Are such pleasures any happiness to us? And if we go to some towns, there is no limit at all to the hopes these teachers cherish. In truth, what teachers must first of all reflect on is just one thing. ‘We are drawing such salaries. Are we doing work worthy of these salaries or not?’ they must ask themselves. The government goes on raising salaries more and more. You must be content with the salary you have. Only then does Śānti come. But when there is no contentment, however much they earn, they have nothing but unrest. Every man, whatever his job, must first ask himself the question, ‘How much salary are we taking, and are we doing work worthy of the salary or not?’ That itself is karma done with no expectation of reward. This is what is called niṣkāma karma. Do work equal to the money you take. You are taking money; if you then do no work, tell me, what betrayal could be greater than this? It is because of this that Bhārata is now begging from every country. They bring it from everyone. They give it to the employees. But if they got work done by them, how much the country would progress! The comforts and joys there are in Bhārata are in no other country. There is very vast land. Perennial rivers flow as abundantly as we could need. Wherever you look, there are favourable conditions. But there is no food to eat. What is the reason? People are not working. Truly, the first thing to be done in Bhārata is to drive away laziness. This laziness keeps growing day by day. All the people in the villages who till the land well and earn a good living, all these small farmers, long for town life; going there, though there are TVs and all, they sell their land, go to the town, enjoy many comforts as long as the money lasts, and afterwards they grieve.
