In plain words

Ānanda Lies Only in Doing Good to Others

Are you doing even the least kindness? Are you making even the least sacrifice? Are you doing even the least good to others? No. Vyāsa told this very thing in the 18 Purāṇas as two sayings.

In the eighteen Purāṇas, two sayings of Vyāsa: helping others brings merit; hurting others, sin.

Help ever hurt never: it is enough to look to these two. Even if you cannot do meritorious deeds, just sit quietly; that itself is a great merit. Do not commit sin. If you cannot help, just keep still. You must not hurt. We must not hurt anyone. You must not hurt, in any circumstances whatever. Only then will you gain true Ānanda. What is the work a man must do? Always help, help. There is so much Ānanda in this. Help. What kind of help? heart to heart love to love. You must not do it for some name and fame. You must do it wholeheartedly. Whatever small thing you do, do it wholeheartedly. We must first of all recognise this truth and try to live by it.

Embodiments of Prema! However many sādhanas you do, unless you first recognise the divine principle in you, there is no use in doing any number of these sādhanas. Today he does them, but what is the use?

He chants mathematics, never forgetting it, yet will not look towards the science of numbers; he searches with care for the way to America, but cannot see the way to Kāśī; he studies all of algebra closely, but does not know the size of his own house; he knows botany in plenty, yet man does not know the use of the tulasī.
