Passage 12

Tap any word for its meaning.

॥॥ ॥॥

In plain words

I said. Having said that You cannot be described in so many ways, I myself am describing You. Is this not a sin! What I thought was one thing, what I said another. You are everywhere. God is all-pervading. I myself described Him as all-powerful. But I walked from there and came to the holy place of Kāśī. Is this not a sin? So the thought is one thing. The deed is one thing. That is what sin means.

In the great-souled, mind is one, word is one, deed is one; in the wicked, mind is one thing, word another, deed another.

To show people how to recognise good and bad of this kind, Ādi Śaṅkara went on giving such teachings. He went on teaching about Advaita. That same Śaṅkara, who had taught so much, at the very end turned and entered Bhakti.

Worship Govinda, worship Govinda, worship Govinda, O foolish mind! ॥Bhaja॥ When the appointed time draws near, no, no, ḍukṛñ karaṇe will not save you. ॥Bhaja॥

He came to that Bhaja Govindam and entered it. Even the wise man becomes a devotee at some time. So the highest place of all, the greatest place, is Bhakti alone. What does Bhakti mean? Bhakti is born of the root called bhaj. That is, offering. Offering complete Prema is itself Bhakti. This is true Bhakti. Doing pūjās, doing vratas, keeping vows: all these are worldly paths. Once we have entered this path of pravṛtti, this is one path for entering nivṛtti. First of all we learned the letters, ABCD. After learning these letters, we join the letters into words. Right within this they put God. After the letters, we put them together into words. Making these words into a sentence. ‘There is God,’ we say.
