Passage 21

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

None of this is what matters.

Giving is the ornament of the hand, Satya the ornament of the throat, and scripture the ornament of the ear.

When you have such jewels, why any other jewels? For the throat there is the jewel called Satya. For the hand there is Dharma, there is giving. With your ears you are listening to what is sacred. On your throat you have put the necklace called listening. On your hand you have worn the bracelet called giving. What more do you want than these? These alone are the true jewels. Those who give big diamond crowns and pomp are only people of show. Those who take them are only people of show. The one who gives is not truly a devotee at all. The one who takes is not God at all. God should not take, and the devotee should not give. What is it that should be taken? You must give your pure Prema. He must see your sacred sacrifice. Taking these two and giving them. Give and take: that itself is heart to heart. That itself is love to love. These are our true jewels; but they bring all these mad, mad things and turn God into a beggar. God is bigger, but not begger. All the devotees together are turning God into a begger. From the land of the Hindus many swāmis go off abroad. Whenever they run short of money, they try for a visa. Is that what should be done? Teach as much as you like in Bhārata. There is all the unrest you like in Bhārata. Set it on the right path. Without cleaning your own house, what can you clean by going to a foreign country? All this is for begger's sake. Chī, chī! This is not true spirituality at all. True spirituality is heart to heart. Love to love. This is the work we must do. More and more, you keep bringing trays and filling up the whole Pūrṇacandra hall. Only yesterday I told Śrīnivās, ‘Why are they playing all these mad, mad games? Take them away,’ I told him. They bring Me what they eat. I eat nothing. What I eat and what I hear are one and the same. I hear good words. I eat your Prema. Give Me those two.
