In plain words
If there is no Prema in you, it is as good as a ghost dwelling in you. You must cultivate such sacred feelings. You must live with divine feelings, with ever-fresh feelings. Embodiments of Prema! What you must chiefly learn is one thing only. Sacrifice your selfishness. You may keep a little of it; there is nothing wrong in that. But is the whole of life to be nothing but selfishness? If from the moment you are born until the day you die you live in selfishness alone, when will you achieve the good of others? When will you nurture purity? When will you attain divinity? It simply is not possible. That is exactly why we must make sacrifice to some extent. You must divide your life into four parts. One part for self-interest, one part for household life, one part for society, one part for God. Only when you divide it into these four parts does true life come. Dāna itself is the bracelet of the hand. That itself is the divine feeling. For those who listen, good listening itself is the fitting ornament. But greatness does not lie in wearing diamond rings. You must listen to good things: that itself is the beauty of the ear.
Dāna is the ornament of the hand.
There is nothing that surpasses this. If you wish to attain divinity within humanness,
Life in the world is fleeting; fleeting are youth and wealth; fleeting are wife, children and the rest; Satya and fame, these two, endure.
Satya and fame: these two alone are lasting. None of the rest is lasting. The body is not lasting. Life is not lasting. Satya and fame: these two you must take up. If you keep speaking nothing but Satya, fame comes of itself. So you must keep nurturing Satya and fame. Only then will your life gain Ānanda. Where does Ānanda come from? Śaṅkara spoke the Bhaja Govindam.
Whether one delights in yoga or delights in enjoyment, whether one delights in company or is free of company,
We must enter into company. Not for enjoyment. Not for wealth.
Worship Govinda, worship Govinda, worship Govinda, O foolish mind! When the appointed time draws near, ‘ḍukṛñ karaṇe’ will not save you, no, never.
