Passage 11

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Dehi is the name of God Himself. He is begging alms of God. Everyone has to beg alms of God.

Tyāgenaike amṛtatva mānasuḥ

God is the One who gives alms of every kind. What is alms? What is wealth? What is learning? What is Viveka? All of these are what we have received from God. All of these are God's gifts. We must pass on to another what we have received from God. The learning you have received you must teach to another too. The wealth you have earned you must give in charity to another too. Only then will wealth stay with you for good. In everything there must be tyāga. "Tyāgenaike amṛtatva mānasuḥ," they said. Tyāga alone is the root cause of immortality. Every man must set himself to tyāga. A mother is going along carrying her child. If some wild beast comes across her path, she is ready to give even her own body to the tiger. She makes every kind of effort to save her child. Mothers are those so given to sacrifice. Mothers are those who have such a sacred feeling. Mothers are those who have set their very lives on their children. It is the mother who rejoices so much when her son prospers. Anyone else may feel a little envy, hatred may arise. But for the mother it is not so. The more the son prospers, the greater the mother's Ānanda. When there are mothers who rejoice like that, why do they cause these mothers pain in Bhārata? This land has the mother's name, 'mother land'.

Today they remember the name of Rāma but forget Rāma's ideals

Merely by loving the country without loving their mother, will they become great? No, no; whether you love the country or not, you must at least love your mother. To love the mother and the country is everyone's duty. It was with this very thing in view that Rāma spoke. "Jananī janmabhūmiś ca svargād api garīyasi," he said: the place where I was born and my mother are greater than the world of heaven.
