Passage 5

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

If Their Study Is to Be Made Worthwhile, Students Must Take Part in Service to Society

The ideal people of Bhārata, who from ancient times gave sacred strengths and powers to the world, have lost those sacred feelings today and, weak as we have become, are falling into many troubles. The system of education goes on growing widely in the world. They are starting schools in village after village. They are setting up schools in street after street. But what is the result of this? What is the benefit that has come merely from starting schools, merely from every student studying? There is no benefit at all. The humility that should go with learning is not to be seen in the student today.

Doing harm to the very one who did good, throwing down the very one who gave food, mocking the very one who taught: this is the progress in learning today.

That is the state of things today, just as it says. They think that all who go to school are educated. But are there people to be seen anywhere who have recognised the sacred, eternal, true meaning in that learning?
