In plain words
So, if what these people have studied is to be made worthwhile, you must take part in service to society. You must shape the country into a pure country. You must share human values with every man. It is not enough merely to raise a man as a man; you must raise him as a complete man. Only then will the matter of this education be seen to be worthwhile.
Students! You must take the vow to give the study you have done its proper worth and honour. Respecting your elders with humility and obedience, you must offer society an ideal life. Only then will you become those who have gained the value that befits your education. When you carry only big degrees and your conduct, when you look at it, runs the opposite way, where is the value of the degrees? Getting marks is nothing great. Students! See that you do not earn remarks in your life. Today educational institutions are turning into business concerns. When a student gets 35 marks out of a hundred, he passes. Then what has become of the other 65 marks? When a man is told to do a hundred tasks and he spoils 65 of them and does only 35, how can he be said to have passed? In those days, by the ancient learning, you had to bring a hundred marks out of a hundred. That alone is true education. Do not toil for marks like these. Develop the Viveka to know that we are studying in order to make the sacred heart broad. Merely studying is not enough. Along with education there must be Viveka as well. So you must enquire well into the way of education, the ancient Dharma and the principle of ancient learning, and then study. The more you advance in this way of Dharma-education, the more sacred a country the country will become. The future of the country rests on the students.
Moral rules have stayed fixed in the books; the whole heart has become a house of foul smell; all deeds have become deeds of selfishness: this is the progress in the learning of today.
