Passage 17

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

All is karma. Man cannot stay even a moment without karma. All is karma; but karma done for the love of God becomes fruitful. ‘This is my karma. This is God's karma’: you must not make such a difference. When you keep the two apart, saying ‘you’ and ‘God’, only separate results come in everything. You and God are not separate. You and God are one. We must act with that kind of faith. Whatever small task you do, it turns into a great one. This small thing itself becomes a big one. For everyone to go into the streets and do service, to go to the hospital and serve the patients: do it, there is no harm; but you must not think that this alone is service. In your office, in your business, in your duty, do your work properly. That duty itself is karma. That alone is true sādhana. You take money from the Government. If you cheat that Government and do sādhana, how can that escape being a fault? You take a salary; do service that fits the salary; that itself is service. You must do service in the office. Correcting these papers is service itself. Looking after your accounts is karma itself. Looking after the management of your bank is karma itself. Do any work. Do not keep thinking, ‘that work, this work’; do it with the feeling that it is God's work. You must never make the excuse, ‘I have no time.’ There is all the time you need. There are twenty-four hours of time. Of the twenty-four hours, how much work do you do in the office? You do eight hours, or seven hours. But what do you do after that? You sleep six hours. What do you do with the rest of the time? You look after your own affairs. For this there is all the time you need. Why should you say there is no time? I will tell you a little story. A man had been wishing to become a supreme devotee. Then he said: ‘Swami! How long a life have You given me?’ ‘My dear one, I have given you a life of 80 years,’ said God. ‘Ah, I am very happy. But up to 20 or 25 years my life goes in play, in songs, in study. Then for 25 years I will earn; in the last 25 years I am making all the plans for security fitting my future, all the plans fitting my children. I have no time,’ he said. Again he said,
