In plain words
In goodness, in humanness, in morality and in the whole of truth: whoever practises and shows forth all these ideals, he is the true youth, and the true young woman, is it not she? Such ones are your best friends, such ones are My best friends.
Embodiments of Prema!
In goodness, in humanness: what is goodness? Good behaviour, good manners, good discipline. In humanness are Satya, Dharma, Śānti, Prema and Ahiṃsā; these five are the five life-breaths. Man's journey is a very short one. His goal, too, is very near. Yet to reach the goal of so near a journey, man takes many births, many years of time. Why so much time? Why all this toil? This is a very short journey. From I to We: this is the journey. To reach from the place called ‘I’ to the place called ‘we’ is the purpose of man's birth, and his goal.
The young women and young men of today are trying to know all the things there are in the whole world. But they cannot recognise the one main truth. Merely by recognising all the things in the whole world, we gain nothing at all. However many powers one wins, there is no use in it. In the world there are thousands of intellectuals. In the world there are many scholars. There are educated people. There are people of great cleverness. What use are they? First of all one must know oneself. Without knowing oneself, what is the use of knowing everything? All these are useless pursuits. Useless learning. So what man has to know is this: he must try to recognise his own true nature. Man loses wealth. But he can work hard and earn it back. He loses many friends. He can make friends again. Whatever is lost, we can earn back; but if human values are lost, we cannot earn them back. Man today has achieved everything, but these human values he is losing. Each one of them is like a life-breath. If Satya leaves a man, he becomes a creature that has lost Satya. If he does not practise Dharma, he becomes one who has lost his second life-breath. Why speak of two, or three? Man today has lost all five life-breaths. Man today is living a merely artificial life in the world. He is not living a natural life. The natural qualities are not in him. Just as an actor puts on a costume in a play, he puts on the costume of a man and uses his life like a corpse. For every human being, God is what matters most. ‘Who is God? Where is God?’ If you ask yourself this: Truth is God, Love is God. There is no such difference as the Satya of Indians, the Satya of Americans, the Satya of Japan, the Satya of Pakistan. For the whole world there is one Satya, and that is God. The languages, ways of conduct and doctrines of countries may differ, but Satya is one. Satyaṃ nāsti priyo dharmaḥ. We are losing the Satya that is dear to us. Prema is as precious to man as life itself. Prema is God; live in Prema. That very Prema we have lost today. We put on a show of artificial love. This Prema is not like that. Heart to heart, love to love. Not body to body. Body is like a water bubble. Mind is like a monkey. Do not follow the mind, do not follow the body; follow the conscience. Only when we develop that seat of the heart does Satya become visible to us.
