Passage 5

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Because the five Pāṇḍavas took refuge in Dharma, they lived in safety and well-being. However rich, however learned, however strong a man may be, if he gives in to the vices of lust, anger and greed, he cannot escape a fall. So do not grow proud as you look upon the strength of your wealth, the strength of your arms and the strength of your learning. Develop the strength of Prema. Only then will your life be blessed.

The Example of Śrī Rāma

Man today is piling up his desires. He is forgetting his ideals. Man must lessen his attachment to the body and increase his love for his country. He must love his motherland and honour it. After Rāvaṇa was slain, Lakṣmaṇa came to Rāma: “Brother! This kingdom of Laṅkā is overflowing with wealth, gold, goods, vehicles and every such thing. So leave Ayodhyā to Bharata and rule this kingdom yourself,” he asked. Vibhīṣaṇa too fell at Rāma's feet and begged him to rule the kingdom of Laṅkā. Having heard them all, what did Rāma say? “Jananī janmabhūmiśca svargādapi garīyasi.” “The mother who gave me birth and the land where I was born are greater than heaven. I cannot leave my motherland and live in a foreign land. So I have no need of the kingdom of Laṅkā,” he said.

Not Wealth but Character Comes First

Some parents want their son to go abroad the moment he has passed his degree. What is there abroad that is not in one's own land? To tell the truth, what is not in Bhārata is in no other country. Many students go abroad for higher studies. But once they go there, they develop twisted notions and take to perverse ways. As far as I have seen, not one of those who went abroad has come back to Bhārata with sound character. Why are parents sending their children abroad? They send them not so that they may become people of character but so that they may become rich. Money can bring worldly comforts, but can it give peace of mind? No. The spiritual alone, and nothing else, can give peace of mind. Today, while many of the people of Bhārata go abroad for money as if seized by madness, foreigners are coming to Bhārata for peace of mind.
