Passage 5

In plain words

Good and bad, both come from you alone. When you stand in front of a mirror, is your form in it? No. Only your reflection appears in the mirror. In the same way, the good and bad that are in you are what is reflected in others.

If no chemical is coated on the back of a mirror, the things beyond it can be seen, but you will not see your reflection in it. The heart is like a mirror. Only when the chemical called Prema is coated on it can you see yourself in it. That Prema itself is divinity. Vedānta called this “Raso vai saḥ.” You cannot separate the sugar from the sweet drink, can you! Just as sugar is mixed in the sweet drink, divinity fills the whole world.

“Na Śreyo Niyamaṃ Vinā”

Only when betel leaf, areca nut and lime are mixed in the right measure does it become a betel quid. In the same way, only when time, action, cause and duty come together is your wish fulfilled. The betel leaf is green; the lime is white. The areca nut is brown. When these three are mixed and taken as a betel quid, the tongue turns red. Without lime there is no taste. The red colour does not come. But it must be used in measure; if you put in too much, the tongue blisters. That is why they said, “Na śreyo niyamaṃ vinā.” Man must keep to a limit in everything. If the temperature of the body is 98°F, it means one is healthy; if it rises to 99°, it means fever has set in. In the same way, blood pressure too must stay within a limit. 120/80 is normal blood pressure. If it rises to 150/90, it turns into an illness. You must keep the words you speak and the deeds you do within a limit too. You must not work beyond your strength. You must think over what work is to be done, when, where and how. In everything you must keep to ‘discipline’. If you act without limit and without discipline, there is every chance of many mistakes.
