Passage 5

In plain words

When a man walks, his shadow too walks along right beside him, does it not! In the same way, the shadow called ignorance keeps following the one who thinks, “I am a great wise man.” To escape it, we must hold the feeling, “Sarvaṃ viṣṇumayaṃ jagat.” This is exactly what the Upaniṣads taught. All is the very form of God. With this in view Tyāgarāja said, “Rāma, You who bear the title of dwelling with overflowing Prema in the ant, in Brahmā, in Śiva, Keśava and the rest, protect me!” From the ant to Brahmā, divinity alone fills everything, everywhere. How can you forget such divinity? This is the effect of modern education, nothing else.

The Mind Must Be Filled with God

Embodiments of Prema! You sing bhajans. But you do not recognise what you sing them for. For some, while they sing bhajans, the mind wanders off to pitch, rhythm and rāga. Pitch, rhythm and rāga have their place too. But if you fix your attention on them alone, the feeling is spoiled. When you truly fill your heart with Prema for God, pitch, rhythm and rāga fall into place automatically. Just as a piece of iron thrown into the fire turns wholly into fire, your mind must become wholly full of God. Milk and water cannot be separated. In the same way you must become one with God. You must recognise the unity within the many. Such a one alone is a true human being. It is not enough to worship God on some festival days. You must pray to God every moment. You may wonder, “If we do that, how will our work get done?” Is your work one thing, and God's work another? No, no. You must not divide it in this way. You are not one thing and God another. So your work and God's work are one and the same. To think that the prayer said in the worship room is God's work, and the work done outside is your own, is a great mistake. Some people stay with worldly feelings right up to the moment they enter the worship room; the moment they go in, they shut the doors and pray to God. You must put away this sense of difference. Only the one who recognises the truth, “My heart itself is the temple of God,” and lives by it, is a true person. Install God in your heart, and whatever work you do takes shape as God's work.
