Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

The people of Bhārata give great importance to the worship of Gaṇapati. But Gaṇapati is shining forth from the very level of your heart. Who is meant by Bhagavān? ‘Bha’ means radiance. So the one who shines everywhere is Bhagavān. When you keep such a Bhagavān in your very heart, why search for Him outside? If you want to see God, you must examine your own heart.

The Fitting Reward of Selfless Service

Students, embodiments of Prema! Girl students! If you want to attain divinity, a single pure Prema is enough. There is no need to recite the hundred and eight Names or the thousand Names. Mukti is not gained by tapas, by pilgrimages or by listening to the Śāstras. You must serve good people. Whomever you serve, you must feel that you are serving God Himself. When you are on your way to the office, if someone on the road is caught in some accident, then, if need be, you must give up going to the office and give them the help they need.

One small example: a boy from Delhi heard Swami's teachings and was moved by them. One day he was going to college. There was an examination at eight o'clock. On the way he saw a beggar who could not walk fall to the ground. At once he tended him as was needed, gently lifted him up and took him to hospital. By then it was already past ten o'clock. Then, looking at the time: “Ayyo, there is no way I can go to the examination today! Still, it does not matter. This itself is the examination God has set me,” he thought. He felt no sorrow that the examination was lost. Afterwards he came to Me. “Swami! One paper is gone. Even so, I feel no sorrow. For I have passed in the examination You set,” he said. “You have passed in your own examination too, my dear!” I said. A month later the examination results were announced. He passed in first class! The service he did with his whole heart received its fitting reward. Each one is the witness of his own mind. He did not grieve, “Ayyo, if I go on serving this man I will fail the examination!” Even if he did not pass in that examination, he was content that he had passed in the examination Swami set. So whatever work you do, you must do it regarding it as service to God.
