In plain words
You were born as human beings. So you must practise human values. If man himself cannot believe in human values, who else will? Do you know what kind of person he is who cannot trust his own heart? He can be called nothing but an ignorant man who searches for himself outside. Does anyone go to others: “Who am I? Where am I?”, do they ask? That is sheer madness. If you want to know yourself, you must search within yourself; there is no gain in searching outside. We have kept precious feelings within ourselves. We must nourish them.
Where Truth Must Not Be Told, Use Your Wits
As far as you can, see that you do not let go of truth. But at times, telling the truth may bring danger. In such a situation, do not tell the truth and do not speak Asatya; you must keep silence. Otherwise you must slip out of it with your wits. That wit too is a yoga. A small example: in a forest, while a ṛṣi was sitting under a tree, a deer came running and slipped into a bush opposite that tree. Just then a hunter came there: “Swami! I have come chasing a deer. Did you see which way it went?” he asked. The ṛṣi was caught in a dilemma of Dharma. If he said he had not seen the deer, it would be Asatya. If he told which way it had gone, the hunter would catch it and kill it. He thought for a moment and said, with wit, “Sir, that which saw does not speak; that which speaks did not see.” That is to say, the eyes saw, but they cannot speak. The mouth can speak, but it did not see. This is the truth, is it not? In this way, through wit, through devotion to God and through self-confidence, you must keep nurturing Satya, Dharma, Śānti and Prema.
For Him Who Says God Is, He Is; for Him Who Says He Is Not, He Is Not
Some people worry whether others will accept human values or not. If we are afraid, we cannot achieve anything at all. When you follow truth, you need not fear anyone else. One man believes that God exists; another says there is no God at all. For him who says He is, He is; for him who says He is not, He is not. “Your God may not be there for you, but my God is there for me”: this you must say boldly.
