Passage 8

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

It is pure. The cooks too are doing it with great zeal. But some do not care for such pure cooking, go to hotels outside, and there, even if they are billed a thousand rupees for one rupee's worth, they pay without shame. Why do you misuse money in this way? You must root out such pride and show. One more small matter. If you have some urgent work in Delhi or Bombay, you may go by plane. But why should those who are free, with no work or business at all, also spend so much money and travel by plane? If you travel by rail, the cost is less, is it not? But you may say that travel by plane is safer than travel by train! Do accidents not happen to planes too? When the time itself is up, anything can happen.

Do Not Waste Food, Time or Energy

Food is God. Don't waste food. Some have their plates heaped with food and in the end go off leaving most of it. It has been said, “Annaṃ Brahma.” What gain is there in wasting food, which is the form of Brahman, and then worshipping Brahman? Take as much as you need, and eat with contentment. Other than that, you must not waste food. Time is God. Don't waste time. Time is the form of God. That is why they describe God as “Kālāya namaḥ kālakālāya namaḥ ..”. Through time alone this world comes into being; through time alone so many works take place. To waste time is to waste life itself!

In the same way, Don't waste energy: through bad words, through listening to bad things, through reading silly, worthless stories, through watching silly, worthless pictures, films and television, a great deal of your energy is wasted. If there is anything good, watch it. There is nothing wrong in that. Speak only as much as is needed. He who talks for nothing is nothing but a fool! Many sit in meetings and keep talking for nothing with those sitting beside them. God has been called “Śabdabrahmamayi”. So you must not defile sound with needless words. By keeping your words under control you will benefit greatly.
