In plain words
Śānti and Ānanda are what is to be asked of God
In Gujarat there lived a rich man called Patel. He was a great devotee. One morning, when he had bathed and sat down to his pūjā, a friend of his came. He waited until the pūjā was over. Later, as they talked, “Patel! You have all the wealth you need. You live in comfort in every way, do you not! What more are you worshipping God for?” he asked. Then Patel gave a fine answer. “I worship God not for wealth, not for happiness and pleasures. What I do not have is Śānti. That is with God. What I do not have is Ānanda. God is the form of Ānanda, the home of Ānanda. So I hope to receive the Śānti and the Ānanda that are with Him. For this alone I pray,” he said. This is true Bhakti.
You must pray to God to win whatever it is that you do not have and God has. What you do not have is Śānti; what you do not have is Ānanda. So you must pray to Him and receive Ānanda and Śānti from Him. However hard you try in the outer world, you will not find Śānti. Many people from abroad: “Swami! We want Śānti,” they say. Then I tell them: you yourselves are the form of Śānti. The Peace you long for is within you yourselves. All that is outside is only Pieces. You are Śānti, you are Satya, you are Prema, you are Ahiṃsā, you are God. When you put your faith in this truth, there will be no room at all for sorrow or grief; you can live in Ānanda. If you want to experience Ānanda, grow the faith, “I am God.”
Hanumān's Bhakti for Rāma
Once Rāmacandra asked Hanumān, “Hanumā! In what way do you meditate on Me?” Then Hanumān: “Swami! As the body, I am Your servant. As the mind, I am a part of You. As the Ātma, I am You and You are I!” he said. Because he recognised this oneness, Hanumān was ever in Ānanda. “Calm, virtuous, strong is Hanumān”: so Rāma gave him great titles.
