In plain words
You, who ought to read so great a book, read some little books or other and are content. What you must earn is not book knowledge. Only when you earn the knowledge of experience will your life be worthwhile.
Self-confidence alone brings every kind of wealth
Embodiments of Prema! Begin your daily round with Prema, fill it with Prema and bring it to a close with Prema. This is the very way to reach God. When Prema is within you yourselves, why do you behave without Prema? Why do you build up hatred? Some hate even their own parents. That is very wrong. “Let your mother be God to you, let your father be God to you”: if a man cannot honour even his parents, how can he honour God? No one else can give the good counsel a mother gives. The mother is God made visible.
You must have heard of Abraham Lincoln. As he belonged to a very poor family, there were not even proper clothes for him to wear. When he went to school, some rich men's children would see his torn and soiled clothes and make fun of him. One day Lincoln came home crying: “Mother! At school my classmates see my clothes and mock me,” he said. Then the mother: “My son! You know our situation. Whatever anyone says, pay no heed to it. Guard your self-respect. Build up your self-confidence. That itself will bring you every kind of wealth,” she taught him. From that day on, as his mother had taught him, Lincoln cherished his self-respect and built up his self-confidence. As a result, when he grew up, he was elected President of America.
Self-respect itself brings grace. You must not be upset that others have blamed you or mocked you. Whatever happens, you must feel, “This is for my own good.” When you develop such equanimity, there will be no one greater than you. Do not brood over the past.
