Passage 6

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

But today such a guru is hard to find, so regard God alone as your guru.

Gurur brahmā gurur viṣṇuḥ gurudevo maheśvaraḥ gurus sākṣāt parambrahmā tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ

The guru is Brahmā, he is Viṣṇu, he is Śiva, he is everything. In this world, everything is the form of God. “All this is indeed Brahman.” All are embodiments of Brahman, all are embodiments of Viṣṇu. All that we see is the vast Cosmic Form. On this very basis the Veda said, “Sahasraśīrṣā puruṣaḥ sahasrākṣaḥ sahasrapāt”. Now the population has grown to crores, but when the Veda said “Sahasraśīrṣā puruṣaḥ...”, the population was only in the thousands. In those days they regarded everyone as an embodiment of God. With the feeling “Īśvaraḥ sarvabhūtānām”, they bowed to everyone. “Sarvajīva namaskāraṃ keśavaṃ pratigacchati”: whoever you bow to, it reaches Keśava alone. “Īśāvāsyam idaṃ jagat”: the whole world is the form of Īśvara. You cannot say that divinity is here and not there. Here, there, wherever you look, there is only the One. Only he who teaches such oneness is the true guru. But today it is very hard to find such excellent gurus. Excellent disciples may still be found, but excellent gurus are not to be found.

Reduce your bad qualities by thinking of God

Among our children there are a great many good ones. But if even one or two go astray, all the children get a bad name. A small example: at night, while you were asleep, two mosquitoes bit you. The next day you brought Flit and killed all the mosquitoes. Though only two mosquitoes bit you, you kill all of them. In the same way, along with the bad ones, those beside them also have to be punished. That is why it has been said, “Give up the company of the wicked, seek the company of the good, do good deeds day and night...”. You must keep away from evil company and enter satsaṅga. You must try to restrain bad qualities such as anger and envy.
