Passage 11

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Those for whom it is done must be satisfied, and those who do it must feel satisfied too. That itself is true service. The joy there is in such service is in nothing else.

Only when the work you do is for the good of others do I become close to you; I will be your friend. Even when you give others a little food, you must give it in the proper way. Yesterday all our children, poor things, worked very hard, went to distant villages and did service. There they handed out food packets to everyone till ten at night. What they did was good work indeed. But they did not use discrimination. I told them: “My dear ones! That food was made in the early hours of the morning. Can it stay unspoiled till ten at night? Could you not see even that much? If the food has spoiled, you must bring it back, and the next day take good food and give it out. Giving out spoiled food is very wrong,” I said. But the students, wholly absorbed in the work they were doing, did not notice this. Not only that; after eating at midday they worked without any rest at all. Sleep awhile after lunch. After the midday meal you must rest for a little while. But the children had not even one minute's rest; right after eating they went from village to village. So some had upset stomachs, some had fever ... such things happened.

Give up selfishness and choose the good of others

Students! Girl students! Whatever work you do, you must do it with discrimination. Today you are children. In the future you are going to be mothers and fathers. So from now on, nurture sacred qualities. Take up sacred deeds. Only then can you lead a sacred life in the future. Human birth is very sacred and most precious. ‘Among living beings, a human birth is hard to attain.’ The worth that man has cannot be compared with anything else. Who gives gold and diamonds their value? Only man, is it not! Men are more valuable than all the wealth of the world.
