In plain words
Each one is the cause of his own joy and sorrow
Embodiments of Prema! First of all, recognise the principle of Prema. Develop Prema within you. Share that Prema with all around you. Turn the whole world into Prema. Then you will have no sorrow at all. Joy and sorrow come about through the mind. So recognise the nature of the mind. Only then will you be blessed. You yourselves are the cause of your joy and sorrow, and no one else. To blame others for your troubles is a great sin. It is only because your conduct is not right that you fall into troubles. As the karma, so the goal. As the thoughts, so the karma. So foster good thoughts. He who has recognised the nature of the mind is the true human being. This is the essence of Vedānta. What does Vedānta mean? The end of the Vedas is Vedānta. That is the knowledge of the Ātma. Is it not foolishness to forget the Ātma and grow the delusion of the body? The Ātma is like a control room. If you enter that control room, you can control all the senses in a moment. Press the one main switch in the house, and the bulbs in all the different rooms light up. The Ātma is like the main switch; the senses are like the bulbs in the different rooms. You have built yourselves a house. In it, a bedroom, a store room, a dining room, a kitchen ... In this way you have made separate rooms. Between one room and the next a wall stands across. It is because of the walls that so many rooms have come about. Knock down those walls and a single great hall is made. In the same way, it is only because you have built a dividing wall called attachment to the body that you cannot recognise oneness. For many births you have been forgetting the infinite, immortal principle of the Ātma and growing a petty attachment to the body; at least from this birth on, try to reduce that attachment. What is this body? “All this is mine”, you say. How far is it yours? Only as long as the body lasts! After that, whose is it? So reduce the sense of possession that says ‘mine’. In this worldly life man keeps using the words “I” and “mine”.
