Passage 3

In plain words

But these are mithyā sādhanas only; they are not sādhanas that are true and eternal. Mithyā means that which appears true for a while and afterwards fades from sight. You do japa, you do dhyāna. These give only a passing satisfaction; they do not bring lasting Ānanda. To gain Ānanda that is true and eternal, you must keep thinking of God without cease. “Sarvadā sarvakāleṣu sarvatra haricintanaṃ.” At all times and in every state you must practise dhyāna on God. As naturally as your breathing in and breathing out goes on, so naturally must you go on thinking of God. You must end your life in the very thought of God. The sādhana you must do is simply this: to follow your breathing in and breathing out. That is, you must follow the principle of ‘So'ham’. This is precisely the right means to attain the principle of God.

Ko'ham? So'ham!

At the moment he is born, man asks, ‘Ko'ham?’ (Who am I?) In his life he must search out the right answer to this question. Before he dies he must come to know “So'ham” (I am God). Only when he recognises this truth does his sādhana bear fruit. Man today builds the mansion of his life on the body, which is like a bubble of water. Who knows at what moment it will burst! Man must rest on the true and eternal principle of ‘So'ham’, not on the body, which is like a bubble of water. Śaṅkara said: “Take no pride in wealth, in people, in youth; Time takes all of them away in a moment…” Why depend on a body as impermanent as this? The Ātma alone is eternal. Ātma, aham (I), Brahman: these names differ, but the meaning of all three is one. What is ever in your home, at your heels, at your side, is the principle of Brahman itself. Whether you are in the waking state, the dream state or deep sleep, what is always with you is the principle of Brahman alone. That is the divinity within humanness. So divinity is not somewhere else; it is right within you. Forgetting the truth that God is right in your home, at your heels, at your side, before your eyes, you are wasting your life on worldly, artificial desires.
