Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

With selfishness and self-interest you are burning your humanness to ash. I said yesterday: man must first enter the spiritual path and work for the progress of society. He must push his personal interests to the last. First Spirituality, then Association, last Individual. This is the message of SAI. Only when he puts divinity first does man begin the enquiry, ‘Who am I?’ Only when he recognises who ‘I’ is does he understand what society is. Only then does it become possible to recognise God, the embodiment of samaṣṭi, present in society. So first of all, try to recognise your own true nature.

You must take food that is wholesome and moderate

‘Food, head, God’: there is a close bond between these three. So those who long to attain divinity must not touch impure food. They must take only pure, sāttvic food. They must take leafy greens and vegetables. They must keep away from eggs, meat and intoxicants. Intoxicants lead the senses down the wrong path. Drinking liquor is not good for sādhana. Liquor brings on an artificial intoxication. But Prema for God brings rapt absorption naturally. Nārada said, “Yallabdhvā pumān icchārāmo bhavati tṛpto bhavati matto bhavati ātmārāmo bhavati.” You must become drunk with such Prema for God alone; you must not drink liquor and sink into intoxication. Through drinking liquor and eating meat, humanness turns into demonic nature. You must not mix intoxicating substances into the food you eat. Some medicines have intoxicants mixed in them. You must not use such medicines. Many people think, ‘Milk and curd are sāttvic foods, after all,’ and take them without limit. They too cause some intoxication. So you must take these too in measure. The food you eat must be wholesome and moderate. You must stop eating at the very moment you feel, “I could eat a little more.”
