Passage 5

In plain words

Studying and taking big degrees is not greatness. Work is important. You must work hard. More than 50 years have passed since Bhārata won independence. Since then many lakhs of students have taken degrees. What good are they all doing the country now? They take no part at all in service to society. No one is striving for the greatness of Bhārata. Before trying to set another's house in order, each one must set his own house in order.

Stay in your own country and serve society

Students! Give up travelling to foreign lands. It does not matter even if you find no job; stay in your own country and serve society. Win good name for Bhārata, the land of your birth. Earn the name: ‘This student is a hero in action, steadfast in sādhana.’ Protect your own country. You all know: Abdul Kalam, the President of our Bhārata, came here today. He never went abroad for money. All the science he had to learn he learned in our Bhārata itself. Tell Me, what is there abroad that is not in Bhārata? “Yanna bhārate tanna bhārata.” What is not in our country is to be seen nowhere abroad. All powers are in Bhārata itself. You were born in Bhārata and grew up in Bhārata. Yet you cannot recognise the sacred nature of the land of Bharata, where you were born and grew up. It is the land of karma that teaches the doing of duty, the holy land that brings the wealth of merit. What can you achieve by forgetting Bhārata, which shines with such fame and honour, and going off to a ‘dry land’? Instead of pouring out the learning you have gained for foreign lands, use it for the progress of your own country. Serve your own people. Look after your own home. Only then will your education bear fruit.
