In plain words
Grow love of country, not attachment to the body
First of all you must bend your back and work; you must become heroes of action. To pass life merrily on mere words, without working, is not the right way. To win a good name, you must work hard. What does a small seed do to become a great tree? It goes into the earth and gives up its own form. Only then does it rise up as a mighty tree and give us fruits. Just as the seed gives up its form entirely, you must root out Ahaṅkāra. Only then will you gain the right result. You must let go of attachment to the body and hold fast to love of country. Students today have no love of country at all. If you ask, “Do you know the national anthem?” they say they do not. But film songs they know, as many as you like! They care nothing at all for the fame and honour of the motherland.
Students! You must go on upholding the honour of the country. You must make self-respect grow. He who has lost self-respect can achieve nothing. What you must nurture today is self-respect. It is possible on the spiritual path alone; it is not gained on any other. Students today all want only these three: riches, might and friends. Then what of virtue? Without virtue these are of no use. Students make friends with one another, saying, ‘Hello, hello...’ Into this friendship you must put true virtue. With their lips they say “hellow”, but their deeds stay hollow. What use is that? We must respect and serve the person before us. Only then will others respect and serve us. Whatever you hope for from others, you must first do that for others and show it. You do not care how your neighbours are faring, yet you expect everyone to help you.
