Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

All of you must become full of Prema. Not only here: wherever you go, you must live in harmony and in unity. You must root out unrest and make Praśānti grow. You must give hatred no room. Only then will you earn the name of devotees of Prasanthi Nilayam. Even if you meet your enemy, speak to him with Prema. He too will surely speak to you with Prema. If you look at him with hatred, he too will look at you with hatred. This whole world is filled with ‘reaction, reflection, resound’. For the peace or the unrest that springs up in you, you yourselves are responsible. So you must not lay the blame on someone else. It is your own faults that bring you unrest. It is your own good deeds that bring you joy.

Foster unity

Embodiments of Prema! If you want to live in joy, take Īśvara's family as your ideal and nurture unity. You may worship a picture as God, but not God as a picture. Only when you nurture unity will you truly have worshipped Īśvara's family. But today unity has dwindled. If a father has two sons, the two do not stand by one word or go along one road; they take ways opposite to each other. Some people keep silent and say nothing at all. That is wrong as well. You must make friends through kind words. You must speak lovingly with everyone. In no circumstance should you hate one another. If the five fingers of our hand do not work in unity, we cannot do even the smallest job, can we! The Pāṇḍavas were just five, but through unity they became worthy of the Prema of the Paramātma. The Kauravas were a hundred strong, yet what happiness did they enjoy? One could not bear the other; one's word did not matter to the other. It was the same with Vālī and Sugrīva! Bearing patiently and enduring whatever hardships come, you must nurture unity. The aim of Mahāśivarātri is to make unity grow in you.
