Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

The Vedāntin says that wherever you look there is the ‘Ātma’. “Sarvaṃ Viṣṇumayaṃ jagat.” Tell the scientist that the whole world is full of God, and he will not believe it. Then how is he able to say that the whole world is made of atoms? For the scientist research is what counts; for the Vedāntin, experience. Physical research yields only passing results. But inward inquiry into the Ātma establishes the eternal truth. Prahlāda recognised the truth that God is everywhere precisely because he had made such an inward inquiry. ‘Is He in this pillar?’ his father asked. ‘He is, father,’ said Prahlāda. When Hiraṇyakaśipu struck that pillar once with his mace, Lord Narasiṃha came forth from it. You must recognise its inner meaning. God is in our own body. ‘Deho devālaya prokto jīvo devas sanātanaḥ’: the body itself is a temple. The jīva within it is itself God. Only when you shatter the delusion of the body does the God within it appear before you. So long as you do not drive away the delusion of the body, divinity cannot be seen. Prahlāda said, ‘Have no doubt that He is in this one and not in that...’ Divinity is not visible to you only because you give room to doubt. Though divinity is in you yourselves, you cannot see it. An example: you have put a box of matches in your pocket. It does not burn your pocket. But is there no fire in it? There is fire in every stick. But fire comes forth only when you strike the stick on the box. In the same way, in every person there is the fire called divinity. Only when you strike the matchstick called the Name of God on the matchbox called the heart does divinity become manifest.

Embodiments of Prema! The Paramātma is in you yourselves as the embodiment of Prema. Prema itself is the very essence of the Paramātma. When you fill your heart with Prema, wherever you look you see only the embodiment of Prema. “As the feeling, so the outcome.” Not that there is no love in you. But what love? Love for kin and friends. To hold such love and think, ‘There is love in me,’ is ignorance. Spread your love not only to your kin and friends but to everyone.
