In plain words

One's own karma, once it is a binding decree, comes circling round; into whatever state it may put you, until you live it out just as it puts you, it does not end. Feet uppermost, ‘Hang without dying,’ head downward: did anyone at all tie them so to that tree? Upon the bats there came nothing but karma, O man!

Did anyone catch the bats, bring them and tie them head downward to the branches of a tree? No. They themselves are living out their own karma. In the same way, every living being, every human being, cannot escape living out their own karmas themselves, in the natural course. Yet every man feels as though he were suffering punishment for a wrong he did not do. He thinks, ‘How strange this is! I have done nothing wrong! Though I have not done it, I have to suffer this hardship!’ The joys and sorrows living beings experience, both of them, are nothing but the fruit of the karmas they themselves have done! Every man is doing karma and experiencing its result. Yet even now, “Where has this karma come from? Has what I did come back? Or is someone else the cause of it?”: man is not rid of this doubt. Not man alone: cattle, birds and wild beasts, worms, insects and the like are also living out their own karmas themselves, each its own. We must recognise that every single thing we experience is nothing but the result of our karmas. Though man has taken on human nature and notices everything, he is still unable to know this truth.
