In plain words

I asked for the cart to be taken straight to Subbamma's house. There on the veranda everyone was weeping. “Swami! Subbamma passed away thinking of you to the very last,” they said. “Where has she gone?” I asked, acting as if I knew nothing. “Swami! The doctors came and saw her, and confirmed that her life had gone,” they said. I went close and drew back the sheet that covered Subbamma. Ants all over her body! I called, ‘Subbamma! Subbamma!’ She opened her eyes. She looked at Me. Shedding tears of joy, she asked, “Swami, when did you come?” “I have just come, Subbamma!” I said. As she talked with her eyes open, looking towards Swami, her relatives came hurrying into the house. “Subbamma! What are you thinking of?” I asked. “Sairam, Sairam... that is what I am thinking, Swami!” she said. With the handkerchief I had with Me, I wiped the tears from her eyes. In great joy she held My hand. “Swami! Have you come to keep the word you gave? Do you still remember the promise you made that day, Swami! How great is your compassion!” she said. Sathya Sai is not one to go back on the word He has spoken. His very name is Satya. His words too are nothing but Satya.

Meanwhile her mother, her younger brothers and the doctors all came inside. “How has Subbamma been talking all this while? Since last night she has had no breath! What a wonder this is! Could this be Sai Baba's power?” they thought. Subbamma took My hand and placed it on her forehead. Then I took vibhūti and smeared it on her brow. “Subbamma! Whatever worry you have had until now, that worry is over, is it not! You kept on grieving, ‘At this time Swami is not by my side.’ You have seen Swami. You have heard Swami's words. You have held Swami's hand. Now close your eyes in peace. I am going to Puttaparthi,” I said. “Very well, Swami, very well. Send me on to wherever I am to be sent, and then go to Puttaparthi,” she said. Saying “Sairam, Sairam,” she closed her eyes in peace. They took Subbamma's body to the cremation ground. Her younger brother laid Subbamma on the pyre and lit it. Even until she was burnt away, her face kept its smile.
