In plain words
To everyone in that village this was a great wonder!
I set out for Puttaparthi. You must walk through the Chitravati river. Subbamma had got a two-bullock cart ready for Me beforehand. I sat in that bullock cart. Gṛham Ammāyi's younger brother Chandramouli was in that cart too. While Subbamma's cremation was going on, the smoke could be seen. Chandramouli asked, “Swami, you stayed so long; could you not have stayed a little longer and seen it through?” “Chandramouli! I am not one to go back on the word I have spoken. I poured water into her mouth and told her to go in peace. I kept the word I gave, and came away,” I said. Chandramouli was overjoyed. “Swami, how great is your kindness to devotees! Language is not enough to describe your kindness,” he said. Swami's kindness towards Subbamma was beyond all measure. In the same way, the Bhakti and surrender Subbamma had towards Swami cannot be described as ‘like this’ or ‘like that’. Her Bhakti seemed greater than Prahlāda's Bhakti.
The news that Swami had brought the dead Subbamma back to life, poured water into her mouth and kept His word reached everyone in the village. The very next day many cars came to Puttaparthi, one after another. “Subbamma came back to life, they say. Sai Baba poured water into her mouth, they say,” people went on saying, in all sorts of ways. Subbamma's whole house in Puttaparthi filled with people. Everyone praised her good fortune. “Sai Baba has kept his word. Subbamma's birth has been redeemed,” everyone thought. Many elderly people came to Me. “Swami, give your word to us too. At the time we die, you must pour water into our mouths with your hand,” they kept asking. “This is not something everyone can have. If it is in your lot, I Myself will come at that time and pour water into your mouth,” I kept telling them.
All the property of that village was in Subbamma's name. She was the head of the whole village. Everyone respected her. But after she came to Swami, she no longer looked at anyone's face.
