Passage 6

In plain words

Only when there is inward, spiritual education as well do we gain Śānti in every way. In fact, the chief education you must learn is Prema itself. However many kinds of learning you learn without Prema, all of them are nothing but artificial learning! The bodies are different, but the dweller in the body is only one. We must keep that fundamental principle first. Only then do we gain the Ānanda that is fitting. Look now: so many people are sitting here in this hall. Everyone's gaze is fixed on Swami alone. Everyone's aim is one. In the same way, you must think of God unceasingly. You must take part in service to society. If one who has gone hungry for ten days gets a good meal, how he rejoices! When the ponds and wells have run dry, if rain falls day after day, how we rejoice! In the same way, the service we do must bring joy to everyone. Give food to those who have no food. Whoever needs whatever, give it to them. Through service alone can you attain divinity. Life is very precious. Born as human beings, do not spend life like beasts.

The Ātma alone is the support; all the rest is what it supports

You who are students must first of all understand what education is. If you read books without understanding that, what good comes of it! In all of you there is one life, one divinity. You must keep that fundamental principle first. That is the Ātma. That is the ‘I’. The Ātma alone is the support; all the rest is what it supports. Everyone can see the Ātma. But for that, you must make the fitting effort. You read great big books. But if you enquire truly, you are learning nothing but hardness through these studies. Develop Prema. If only there is Prema, everyone becomes our friend. Without Prema, whatever we do, whatever we say, all of it is nothing but artificial. What is the use of our being, without Prema! You, love your neighbour.
