Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

He must love his neighbour. In this way, we must go on developing Prema. There must not be the least hatred in us. We must live together in harmony. “Sahasra śīrṣā puruṣaḥ sahasrākṣaḥ sahasra pāt”. All the heads, all the eyes, all the feet are God's alone! Recognising this oneness, we must develop the feeling of Prema. But now you are sullying even Prema with worldly feelings. We must take Prema as Prema alone. Only then do we all become one.

Who is great?

Our hand has five fingers. All of them are needed. If any one of them is missing, it is not possible to do the work properly. One day the five fingers argued among themselves: ‘Who among us is great?’ The thumb: “I myself am greater than all of you. Without me no one can do any work at all,” it said. At once the index finger laughed, the story goes. “O Thumb! Without my help, what can you do? To point out, ‘This one is so-and-so, that one is so-and-so,’ everyone uses me alone. So I myself am the great one,” it said. The middle finger said, the story goes, “How laughably you talk! I myself am bigger than all of you. You four stand on either side of me as ADCs (bodyguards). So I myself am the great one.” The ring finger said, the story goes, “Sir, what you say too is very laughable. They put gold rings set with diamond, cat's-eye, emerald, ruby, gomedha and topaz first of all on me alone. So I myself am king over all of you.” Last of all, the little finger said, the story goes, “Sir! Whether it is to punish wrongdoers or to teach anyone a lesson, I myself go out in front as commander of the army. You follow me. I am the leader of all of you. So I myself am the great one.” Then the heart stepped into the middle: “Foolish ones! It is not right for you to quarrel like this. Only when you work together in unity and harmony does any task become possible to achieve. So all of you are great!” With that, it taught them a lesson.
